Glyndebourne Festival Opera is presenting its own “fringe” festival. A series of additional performances have been programmed throughout August, ranging from a new promenade opera by the composer Julian Philips through to a Glyndebourne Youth Opera double bill. With support from the New Generation Programme and the Jerwood Charitable Foundation, the 77-year-old opera festival aims to introduce its audience to Glyndebourne’s output beyond the main stage.
The “fringe” events, held before the main Festival productions, will focus on showcasing young talent. This year sees the Jerwood Chorus Development Scheme present Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s La Descente d’Orphée aux Enfers. Julian Philips, Glyndebourne’s first composer-in-residence (2006-09), returns to the festival with his take on the Orpheus myth in the promenade opera Followers. Glyndebourne Youth Opera presents When I am Old by Hannah Conway, with a libretto by Hazel Gould, inspired by the story of Rachel Corrie, a young American peace activist killed in Gaza in 2003.
The pre-performance “fringe” events are free to ticket holders for the main festival.
